Is the seductive pull of social norms leading you astray?

What are you getting seduced by in your day to day life? Are you pursuing your goals? What is stopping you from taking action towards your goal? Are you relaxing in your comfort zone, and being just satisfied with the mundane activities? This is called as the seduction of our day to day activities.

You get so comfortable with the daily activities and habits, that you are not ready to break this cycle of daily routine. You start getting uncomfortable with the new things and a feeling of insecurity and lack of courage to try something different, could be one of the reasons, why you end up in just wishful thinking and never reach your goals.

What are these social norms? Social norms were initially created to bring a certain order in the society. Social norms can be described as unwritten rules that dictate how you should behave in various social situations. These norms are often so ingrained in your minds that you don’t even realize you’re following them. So you are basically addicted to this kind of seduction, unconsciously. The pull of social norms can be so strong that it can lead you to make decisions that are not in your best interest, thus pulling you away from your goals and aspirations.

For example, if you’re in a group of people who are all doing something which is wrong, and which is not aligned with you, but you may still go along with it because you don’t want to be the odd one out.The tendency to conform to others opinions, even when they are clearly wrong, happens, because you don’t want to be the odd one out, and you want to have that sense of belonging as being part of the group.

Social norms can be incredibly seductive. They provide us with a sense of belonging, guide our behavior in uncertain situations, and can even shape our beliefs and values. But we must be careful not to let the pull of social norms lead us astray. We must be willing to stand up for what we believe in, even if it means going against the group. Only then can we truly be true to ourselves and make decisions that are in our best interest.

Bhargavi Sameeran, our Fortune Academy student, was sharing her experience. Recently her family member fell seriously ill and everything was going haywire for some time. She had very important calls and meetings to attend, which was kept pending for the past 6 months.

Irrespective of what was happening in her family in the background, she was able to complete her long pending tasks. She didn’t allow herself to get seduced by the social norms, that if some tragedy is happening in the background, you should be bogged down by it. She has set an example for everyone that irrespective of what is happening around you, you can still accomplish your tasks and goals.

This doesn’t mean she is not bothered about what happened in the family. Simultaneously, she was also contacting the Blood Donor Groups, to get help for the sick family member.

Irrespective of what’s happening in and around us, we should be able to maintain balance in our energy, so that we remain focused on our goals and also be a source of strength and support to others.
