Our mind often tends to be tempted by things that motivate us to procrastinate and stay in our comfort zone.  The temptation might seem natural, but it’s an irresistible force that can cause us to stray from our goals and intentions, whether it’s the allure of unhealthy food or the desire to procrastinate instead of working towards our goals. However, there are ways to resist temptation and stay focused on your goals. Here are some tips on how to avoid letting temptations disturb your progress:

Know your why:

One of the best ways to resist temptation is to clearly understand what you want to achieve and why it’s important to you. When you have a clear set of goals, staying focused and avoiding distractions that could steer you off track is more effortless. It’s also helpful to prioritize your goals so you know what to focus on first.

Be in the right ambiance:

Surrounding yourself with a positive and supportive environment and with like-minded people can help you stay motivated and on track towards achieving your goals. These people can provide encouragement and accountability, helping you to stay focused and resist temptation. On the other hand, being around negative or unsupportive people can make it harder to stay motivated and achieve your goals.

You have to be your biggest cheerleader:

Self-talk can profoundly influence our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Using positive self-talk can help you stay focused and motivated and can also help you resist temptation. When you are facing hard times, you have to be your biggest motivator. Temptation is often fueled by stress and negative emotions. We, humans, are emotional creatures and if we don’t have command over our own emotions, we will end up self-sabotaging. One should be wise enough to notice the core reason behind a certain temptation and then find ways to get out of it.

Plan ahead and have a backup plan:

Try to visualize the potential outcome of not able to overcome a particular temptation and imagine how damaging it could be to your life. Once you clearly see that visual in your mind you will overome any kind of temptation that demotivates you from moving forward.

Think about the potential consequences of giving in to temptation. Will it really be worth it in the long run? Will it help or hinder you in achieving your goals? Reminding yourself of the potential consequences of giving in to temptation can help you stay focused and motivated to resist.

Remind yourself of the consequences:

Practice mindfulness:

Whatever action you perform in a day, make sure that you do it because you consciously intend to do it, not because of an external trigger.  Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment. When you’re mindful, it’s easier to recognize when you’re being tempted and to make a conscious choice about how to respond.

So, always be aware of why you are doing what you are doing and by placing yourself in the right ambience, there will be no external trigger to resist your progress. In the hardest times of life you will hardly find motivators so make sure that you act as a self motivator and before responding any temptation just try to visualize the potential damage that could cause to your life and you will be automatically staying away from it.
